Mixed Feelings Greet New Lagos-Ibadan Train Fares

The Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has said passengers travelling on the new Lagos-Ibadan train starting operations in January 2021 will have to pay between N3,000.00 and N6,000.00.
Apparently, the approval of the charges for the trip on the new standard gauge rail line, details of which were made available on Friday, didn’t go down well with some commuters who complained that “ the fares are vey high.”
A student, Peter Ovia who regretted that government hardly put the youths into considerations while makig their plans, described the effort as a “goverment transport system of hardship.”
Another while comparing the train fare to cost of bus ride, pointed out that “travelling by bus on Lagos-Ibadan route which is N2,500 appears to be cheaper than a train ride.
“Let me give you another example. BRT customers pay N400 from Ikotu Egbe, a Lagos surburb to Oshodi, Lagos. Private operators charge a lower fare, N250 on the same Ikotu-Oshodi route. Government is shortchanging commuters,” he told JUSTOURS.
Despite the high cost, some said the new Lagos-Ibadan train is “a welcome development” as it “will remove pressure from road” among other advantages
