Why Citizens Mock FG After Suspended Twitter Operations in Nigeria

Posted by JUSTOURS                         Eagle-eyed Social Media users have said they noticed that the Federal Government which has suspended, indefinitely, the operations of the microblogging and social networking service, Twitter, in Nigeria didn’t used Nigeria news media or government media house to announce the suspension. One of the social users, Tony Eke said  government officials didn’t even realise they ought to have used the National Television Authority (NTA) but instead rushed to their ‘darling’  Twitter. ” NTA has wide coverage now, Lols,” he added with a  mocking emoji. Another said the federal government can” fine Twitter as usual, the same way they used to harass local media. “

Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, announced the suspension in a statement issued in Abuja, Friday. The statement which was signed by Segun Adeyemi, the Special Assistant to the President (Media) Office of the Minister of Information and Culture pointed out that the persistent use of the platform for activities that were capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence.

Mohammed said the Federal Government had also directed the

National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to immediately commence the process of licensing all OTT and social media operations in Nigeria.
