Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi is planning a dinner in honour of Mrs. Nike Davies Okundaye just weeks after returning from South Africa where the Nigerian batik and adire textile designer made Nigeria proud. The Chaplin, Rhodes University Council, Dr. Chrissie Boughey is expected to grace the occasion. The detail of the event is still kept under wraps by Mama Nike as she is fondly referred to by art lovers.
Okundaye, owner of Nike Art Gallery Limited who is also a member of Lagos State Council of Art, was recently conferred with an honorary doctorate degree, ‘Doctor of Fine Art.’ by Rhodes University, South Africa. Mama Nike who was accompanied to South Africa for the award by her husband, Chief Reuben was apparently excited. There was one incident that made her a bit sad during their one week stay in South Africa. The Nigerian High Commissioner to South Africa was not by her side even though he was said to be contacted.
“I was excited and happy. But our ambassador in South Africa did not come to support this woman, somebody, who promotes our culture. I felt very disappointed he didn’t come or send somebody to represent him having seen our invitation,” she said. Adding:” He ought to be ambassador for everybody not only politicians.”
The Nation contacted the Nigerian High Commissioner to South Africa for comment. But they could not be reached as calls made to the embassy were not answered. Okundaye has since shrugged it off.
