South Korean firms, Hyundai, KIA may set up auto assembly plants in Ghana. Eagle-eyed social media users were quick to find a post where Ghana’s Minister for Trade and Industry, Alan Kyerematen announced the ambitious plans of the auto firms last Thursday. He said the plants will be ready by the end of 2022. The Nigerian social media users said they were surprised at Hyundai and KAI, querying why they should have time for Ghana instead of Nigeria the country that  has a huge market.                              “What! Can’t KIA see Nigeria has the size of population that excites manufacturers? You mean the company can later on bring their finished products to Nigeria, we have the market? Hyundai!”one exclaimed.
Another is worried that the new effort is coming at the time Twitter also moved to Ghana.                                                                Not a few pointed pointedly to Africa’s new trade agreement which has its headquarters in Accra, Ghana.  It is gathered that the move is a product of the Ghana Automotive Development Programme orchestrated by the Ghanaian government in partnership with some players in the industry, a development Kyerematen noted will see other automobile firms setting up assembly plants in the country.

“Pleased to announce that Hyundai & KIA are set to establish assembly plants in Ghana by the end of 2022 to join Toyota-Suzuki, Nissan, Kantanka, Volkswagen & Sinotruck,” the minister tweeted on his official handle. “The Ghana Auto Development programme = 3,600 assembly & 6,600 manufacturing parts jobs in Ghana.”
