The book launch of Chief Dr. Nike   Davies-Okundaye, Nigeria’s Textile Queen and internationally renowned artist, brought unique brands and people together in Lagos, recently.

 GAC Motors is one of the few iconic brands that have celebrated the legend affectionately called Mama Nike who shared her crafts industry insights in a Biography “Bata Mi a Dun ko ko ka” (my biography) authored by Kofo Adeleke with a foreword written by former United States of America Ambassador to Nigeria, Dr. Robin Renee  Sanders.

 Speaking on why the brand recognised Mama Nike, Antoine George- GDN said its part of their tradition. George said: “Escudo Rojo was proud to partner with the Nike Art Gallery for the launch of the biography of the Nike Art Gallery’s founder, Nike Davies-Okundaye.

The book details Nike’s life and accomplishments, through her dedication and the unique energy she brings to promoting Nigerian art in all its forms.For Escudo Rojo DNA, “we focus on the celebration of life, art, and joyful moment, thus Mama Nike was a natural partner for our brand as she marked yet another momentous milestone.”

 The formal unveiling of Okundaye’s biography was graced by the Nobel Laureate Professor Wole Soyinka, The CEO of the Nigerian Stock exchange, Oscar Onyema and other high profile personalities.

Mama Nike passed through arduous and historic journey on rising to fame, from the walls of Ogidi-Ijumu, a small village near Kabba in South-west Nigeria with no formal education.

Okundaye was in her best elements as she thanked all present. “Thank you all for celebrating me,” she said.

She said of the wine: “Escudo Rojo is very smooth and it helps me a lot.” Soyinka, a friend of Mama Nike also commended the veteran  artist. “Today is all about my aburo (junior sister), it’s always a delight to see her, the embodiment of “Gbogbo nishe,” a multifaceted individual. Nike is one of the most exceptional and unique artists I’ve ever met, not because she uses herself as her own model of expression, but because she’s a walking piece of art that spreads joy all around, it’s an honor to celebrate with you today aburo. It’s time for the world to get to know you and celebrate you,” he said.

Award-winning sculptor, painter, and printmaker, Professor Bruce Obomeyoma Onobrakpeya said: “The best setting to discover a genius is in the informal educational setting rather than the academy. The living legend turned 69 on May 23 and is celebrated for her Art, philanthropy, and strength of character. The protofeminist weathered many personal storms, from a young age and emerged to the top. Her work has exported Nigerian culture worldwide into prolific collections including, The Smithsonian, The Gallery of African Art, The British Library, in Londondale; amongst other high-profile homes including former US Vice President, Walter Mondale. She currently lectures at several universities in the United States, UK, and Canada.
