Not a few tourism businesses jostled to position themselves as top destinations on the travel map or woo Africa tourists at Akwaaba Travel Market in Lagos a few weeks ago. The industry representatives came from far and wide.  The venue of 2019 Akwaaba travel show was Eko Hotel & Suites. In fact, Eko Hotel has been the proud host of the West Africa leading Expo from inception to its 15th edition.

Eko Hotel did not disappoint. Both trade delegates and visitors couldn’t resist the hotel which is popular for its unique offerings including accommodation and conferencing. It exhibited at the vantage position just at the entrance on the Ground Floor of  the exhibition hall. Their stand was eye-catching.

The fair opened with a colourful ceremony that Sunday afternoon. Nigeria’s Father of Tourism, Chief Mike Amachree, joined other high profile personalities, including the Director General of the National Council of Arts and Culture (NCAC), to cut the tape to declare the fair open. Soon the arena was agog with activities. People were trooping in to network and learn about innovations in the travel industry.

Eko Hotel management was ready to offer refreshment as visitors arrive throughout the 3-day fiesta. The hotel’s courteous staff members were on hand to explain their latest Christmas holiday programme for families.

The founder of the fair, Ikechi Uko aid 2015 edition was the year the fair’s vision came into fruition as a rallying point for Africans and Africans in the Diaspora. “When we launched the ATQ metrics in 2003/2004, it was that we were going to link up the four continents that have the blacks. Our tag line was ‘One culture, many places.’ So, it took 15 years for us to reconnect with our Diaspora brothers. When we started Akwaaba, we connected Nigeria, then West Africa and East, Africa, then South Africa. Then, this year, we are able to bring the Caribbean into the metrics.  This is the first time in 15 years that the vision has come to pass.”

Mr. Folunrosho Coker, Director General, the Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation ( NTDC) also visited Eko Hotel & Suites’s stand at 2019 Akwaaba travel show.
